GüterBim - The telematic challenge

High public interest leads to a continuation of the freight light rail project in Vienna.

The telematic challenge

This success of the GüterBim pilot project has encouraged the public, commerce and industry to seriously consider  the freight light rail as a CITY-logistics alternative to road transport for the distribution of goods inside the centre of Vienna.

Continuous tests with potential customers have shown the feasibility of the new service to transport goods by tramway or light rail in dense urban areas.

As a result the Austrian Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology has asked the joint venture (Wiener Linien, Wiener Lokalbahnen, Tina Vienna and Vienna Consult) to carry out further research on interoperable and intermodal telematic systems which support the urban supply chain.

What are the objectives of the new project?

Develop and implement a telematics-supported operation guidance system for freight light rail systems, which offers the following services:

bullet tracking and tracing with real time information for the sender and the receiver of goods
bullet integration of cash-and-carry systems
bullet integration of invoicing systems
bullet establishment of a customer centre (call centre)

The pilot:

Together with potential customers the open-access-platform shall test the feasibility of the telematics system for an efficient distribution of goods and its multimodal application.
